While BDSM often brings to mind the labels "dominant" and "submissive," there’s a third, often-overlooked class that falls between them: "switch." “A switch is someone who demonstrates both characteristics and is comfortable with both submissive and dominant roles,” says Megan Harrison, LMFT. Of those surveyed, 93% of men and 96% of women reported having previously fantasized about BDSM in some form. Across the United States, people are very into the idea of trying BDSM with a partner: in a survey of 4,175 Americans, Justin Lehmiller, Ph.D., a research fellow at the Kinsey Institute, found that BDSM is the kink people fantasized about the most. For many people, that means delving into BDSM, an umbrella term for any activity falling under the categories of bondage/ discipline, dominance/submission, and sadism/masochism. Identifying your kinks in the bedroom is a normal, healthy part of exploring your sexuality.
